Properties

Silicon esters are silicon compounds that contain an oxygen bridge from silicon to an organic group, for example, Si-OR. D-101, the methyl ester of orthosilicic acid, is a colorless, low-viscosity liquid. It is industrially the most important of the tetraalkyl silicates.

Reactivity

Use does not require acid- or alkali-catalyzed hydrolysis. D-101 easily hydrolyses upon addition of water. Since all four methoxy groups are able to participate in this reaction, D-101 is regarded as tetrafunctional. Hydrolysis leads to silanol groups which, in a subsequent condensation reaction, form very stable siloxane bonds (-Si-O-Si-).

Application and performance

D101 Silane that can be applied neat, diluted or as part of a formulated product. Applied to natural stones or other construction materials, it forms a silica-gel like binder (SiO2) that increases the substrate strength.

Intermediate for sol-gel process. On glass and plastic lens materials, D-101 silane provides a scratch-resistant, hard-coat to the finish.

D-101 is used as crosslinkers in silicone rubber systems.

D-101 is used as drying agents in sealing compositions.
